Preparations for the 4th AfricaSan Conference holding in Dakar, Senegal from October 8 - 10 2014 have taken off with the signing of the hosting memorandum of understanding Thursday August 7 2014 in Dakar. The MoU was signed between the Government of Senegal represented by the Minister for Water and Sanitation, Senegal and current AMCOW President, Hon. Ahmadou Mansour Faye and the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW) represented by the AMCOW Executive Secretary, Hon. Bai Mass Taal.
The theme of AfricaSan 4 is "Making Sanitation for All a Reality in Africa", and serves as a platform to assess the much the continent was able to achieve on the MDG Sanitation targets and the eThekwini commitments on sanitation made by African Ministers responsible for sanitation at the 2nd AfricaSan conference in Durban, South Africa in 2008.
The conference will also define what needs to be done to further deliver improved sanitation for all in the continent by 2030.
Host Minister and AMCOW President, Hon. Ahmadou Mansour Faye said at the ceremony, “Senegal is ready to host Africa and the global community for this conference and we look forward to African Ministers making commitments on priority actions to be taken beyond the 2015 MDG target date to deliver quality sanitation for the teeming populations in Africa.” AMCOW Executive Secretary, Hon. Bai Mass Taal re-echoed the need to accord political priority to sanitation issues given the negative impacts of poor sanitation in the continent.
The 4th AfricaSan conference is being hosted by the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW) in conjunction with the Government of Senegal and is proudly sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with supported by many partners in the sanitation sector. Over 1000 participants are expected to attend the three day event.
