The 9th General Assembly of the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW) has ended in Dakar, with the Minister for Water and Sanitation, Senegal, Hon. Pape Diouf elected AMCOW President.
In a statement while handing over to the newly elected President, immediate past AMCOW Interim President and Minister for Water Resources, Hon. Sarah Reng-Ochekpe expressed confidence in the ability of Senegal to effectively steer the ship of AMCOW for the next two years. She called on colleague Ministers to extend their cooperation to Hon. Diouf in order to move AMCOW to greater heights given the challenging role AMCOW is expected to play as the millennium development goals end and in the post 2015 development era. Hon. Ochekpe called on the President of Senegal, His Excellency Macky Sall to give maximum support to the new AMCOW President and to the strengthening of AMCOW as a key regional mechanism on achieving the Sharm el Sheikh Commitments as mandated in AU Assembly decision on water security and sanitation.
In his statement, the new AMCOW President, Hon. Pape Diouf expressed delight for the confidence reposed in him by the Ministers and pledged his commitment to serve AMCOW to the best of his ability. Recognizing the enormous challenges ahead, Hon Diouf said that the government of Senegal is determined to bring about positive service delivery to focus needed attention to the implementation of AMCOW's 2014 - 2016 work programme. Other countries elected into the AMCOW EXCO 2014 -2016 include Gabon as Vice President for Central Africa region, Sudan as Vice President for Eastern Africa region, Algeria, Vice President for North Africa region, Zimbabwe for Southern Africa region, and Burkina Faso for West Africa region.
